Dry Needling
Despite its scary-sounding term, “dry needling” is a highly successful therapeutic technique that is rapidly gaining popularity. Needling is used to release “trigger points,” or areas of tight, painful muscle, typically in the lumbar region.
Therapist Scott Kelley (DPT, Cert DN, Cert SMT, FNCP, Dip. Osteopathy) employs this method. There are two types of trigger points: “active” and “latent.” When a trigger point is active, it is literally creating pain, but when it is latent, it is not currently providing pain but can be triggered to produce pain if certain conditions are met. Trigger points cause discomfort, but they can also alter motor patterns in such a way that regular muscle firings or mechanics are disrupted. Essentially, the goal is to quiet down the muscle.
Dry needling, as opposed to more conventional physical therapy methods, may be more efficient at relieving these deeper, intramuscular trigger sites. It’s typical for your muscles to feel a little sore after a dry needling session, much like they would after a vigorous workout. If youre looking for more than “traditional” physical therapy, then try Kelley Physical Therapy!
